Exceptional diamonds were the stars of two major international auctions in New York, which were held earlier in June, signalling vigorous market demand for high-end jewellery.

A diamond-studded necklace by jewellery designer Andrew Clunn beat pre-sale estimates of US$2 million to US$3 million when it sold for US$4.13 million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale on June 9. The necklace is set with 28 graduated oval-shaped diamonds weighing a total of 168.91 carats.

Other notable sales were a 73.11-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond ring by Glenn Spiro, which was snapped up for US$3.4 million; a 23.59-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, which achieved US$2.92 million; and two diamond pendants, which sold for US$1.77 million and US$1.17 million, respectively.

Christie’s New York meanwhile sold two one-of-a-kind diamonds – The Chrysler Diamond and The Dancing Sun – at a Magnificent Jewels auction on June 8.

The Chrysler Diamond – a pear-shaped, D-colour, internally flawless gem of 54.03 carats – yielded US$5.07 million. Its illustrious history dates back to 1958 when Harry Winston purchased what was then known as the Louis XIV Diamond from the estate of Thelma Chrysler Foy, daughter of Walter Chrysler, railroad and automotive executive and namesake of New York City’s iconic Art Deco skyscraper.

The Dancing Sun meanwhile is a fancy intense yellow diamond of 204.36 carats of VVS2 clarity grade, which fetched US$4.95 million. It is the largest polished diamond mined in North America, according to Christie’s. “This exceptional stone, along with six additional diamonds ranging from 14.52 to 1.06 carats, were cut and polished from the largest gem-quality rough diamond unearthed in North America. Weighing 552.74 carats, the rough was uncovered in 2018 from the Diavik diamond mine,” revealed the auction house.
